Shared Serial Ports

Allows any number of applications to open serial port without configuring them specifically

Shared Serial Ports makes it possible to establish connection between several applications and one real serial port at once.

Such connection is based on virtual port technology by Eltima. Created virtual serial ports enable communication between serial port and applications. Acting as absolute copies of physical ports, all virtual serial ports have the same name as a shared COM-port (COM1, for instance) and serve as real port COM1 to applications.

To add virtual ports with different names, use "one-to-many" connection of Serial Splitter. Virtual serial ports created by Shared Serial Ports ensure that all applications receive data from a physical serial port simultaneously. This considerably extends the potential of serial port devices (like GPS receiver, modem, cash machine, barcode scanner, etc), which would operate with a single application otherwise.

Common objectives and our solutions:

  • One port for many applications

At the abstraction level, Shared Serial Ports creates any number of virtual copies of a real COM1 with the same name. In this way, you will have any number of COM1 ports in your system, which serve as common physical ports to all applications and ensure the integrity of data transmitted from a serial device to all applications.

For instance, GPS device receives information about location of an object. GPS device sends this data via a serial port (COM1) to a computer with Shared Serial Ports installed. Our software shares COM1 and enables several applications to use GPS data.

set access rights: READ, WRITE and CONTROL
  • Have several applications access one serial port

Shared Serial Ports allows to open one real COM-port by several applications. They are all shown in the Applications list, where you can add/remove applications and set specific access permissions: READ, WRITE and CONTROL. Default permissions are READ and WRITE, which means that applications can read from and write to real serial port, but cannot change its control lines states. By enabling CONTROL rights, you define main applications which can change control lines states.

  • Control serial port signal lines

All hardware signal lines (DTR/DSR, RTS/CTS, RING, ERROR, DCD, etc.) are emulated and supported. As in real null-modem connection, DTR of the local port is connected to DSR and DCD of the remote port, and RTS of the local port is connected to CTS of the remote port.

Shared Serial Ports is:

  • a simple yet professional solution to share one serial port
  • based on unique serial port sharing technology by Eltima, which ensures fast and correct serial data transmission
  • able to provide signal lines control to any application based on your configuration when sharing a serial com port

Shared Serial Ports overview:

  • Completely transparent operation
  • Bidirectional data transfer
  • Flexible permissions control
  • "Hot" installation - no reboot required either for installation or for creation of virtual serial ports

Shared Serial Ports is aimed to assist:

  • Communication System Development
  • GPS Development
  • Radio-/Telecommunication Companies
  • Any business with a need to implement advanced data exchange between serial devices and applications
  • System programmers
  • System administrators
  • Hardware and software integrators
